Successful Defense of Local Brewer’s Brand

Douglas Riley, L&L Intellectual Property partner, was a featured speaker at a recent seminar at New York Law School’s Institute for Information Law and Policy. The seminar was entitled “Beer and Beverage Business and Trademark Reform.”

Discussion focused on Doug’s success in defending Rock Art Brewing Company of Vermont against an attempt by Hansen Beverage Company of California to block registration of Rock Art’s Federal Trademark for its “Vermonster” beer. Professor Dan Hunter, Director of the Institute, moderated. Also on the panel was Lauren Mandell, in-house trademark counsel for Diageo North America, owner-licensor of such famous trademarks as Guinness, Captain Morgan and Jose Cuervo.
